Briquetting Plants

Carbon Electrode Manufacture

  • Elkem Carbon is the world’s largest producer of electrically calcined anthracite and electrode paste, which are necessary in the manufacturing process for steel, aluminium, silicon, ferrosilicon and other metals.
  • This product will be shipped from Swansea docks to Elkem.

Calcined Anthracite

Markets

  • Electrically calcined anthracite (ECA) is manufactured by heat treating high grade anthracite coal in an electrically “fired” calcining furnace. ECA is heated to temperatures as high as 2000 C, which results in some development of graphitic structure in the finished product.
  • When compared to conventional anthracite coal, ECA has high carbon content and relatively high thermal and electrical conductivity compared to un-calcined anthracite. As a result of the unique processing used to manufacture this material it has low moisture, volatile, and sulphur content.
  • Electrically calcined anthracite can be used in the manufacture of Prebake electrodes, Soderberg and tamping pastes, and carbon blocks. ECA is also an excellent smelting additive due to its high purity and consistency

Filter Media for Water Utilities

  • Carbon filtering is a method of filtering that uses a bed of activated carbon to remove contaminants and impurities, using chemical adsorption.
  • Each particle/granule of carbon provides a large surface area/pore structure, allowing contaminants the maximum possible exposure to the active sites within the filter media.
  • Activated carbon works via a process called adsorption, whereby pollutant molecules in the fluid to be treated are trapped inside the pore structure of the carbon substrate. Carbon filtering is commonly used for water purification, air filtering and industrial gas processing, for example the removal of siloxanes and hydrogen sulphide from biogas. It is also used in a number of other applications, including respirator masks, the purification of sugarcane and in the recovery of precious metals, especially gold. It is also used in cigarette filters.

Carbon Powder / Carbon Black

  • Carbon black is mainly used as a reinforcing filler in tires and other rubber products. In plastics, paints, and inks, carbon black is used as a colour pigment.
