Balance the need to achieve commercial aims with the need to minimise the effect of its activities on the environment.

Regulatory

Comply with and review performance against relevant statutory and regulatory requirements

Impact

Where appropriate, adopt an environmental impact assessment as an integral part of the process of project appraisal and planning.

Nature

Manage land holdings with due regard to the environment and wherever practicable, identify and maintain areas of natural habitat.

External

Establish and enforce contractual obligations to achieve effective environmental management amongst contractors.

Purchasing

Consider environmental issues in purchasing, supply and management of materials and equipment.

Workforce

Develop environmental awareness and responsibility amongst employees.

Performance

Include an environmental performance statement in the company’s annual report.

Set up technical working parties to address developing issues at all sites.

  • construct overburden mounds with a natural profile;
  • locate processing and stocking areas sensitively;
  • ensure sensitivity in the location, direction and quantity of on site lighting facilities.

  • recycle water wherever possible;
  • construct and fence water treatment areas to appropriate safety standards.

  • monitor operations to ensure that dust emission is kept to a minimum in compliance with statutory controls;
  • utilise water bowsers and sprays wherever necessary;
  • Cease dust generating operations during adverse climactic conditions;
  • locate processing and stocking areas sensitively.

  • enforce a company Code of Practice to ensure that drivers and vehicles give no cause for concern;
  • all lorries leaving our sites will be washed and sheeted before entering public roads;
  • lorry routes will, where possible, be directed away from residential and other sensitive areas.

  • setting up site liaison committees to ensure community involvement;
  • providing support to local schools, charities, sporting groups and local organisation.

  • careful storage and utilisation of soils;
  • management of restored areas for at least 5 years.
